I guess to start, my music taste started with my dad. One of my earliest childhood memories is singing "lucy in the sky with diamonds". The radio went out on our car and i started to sing the song, i was around four. Apparently my dad played me the Beatles when I was younger. He had three beatles album: The White Album, Sgt. Pepper and the blue greatest hits, i can't remember the title for that one.
By the time i was five i inherited all of my dad's albums, he really wasn't playing them. So along with the Beatles, i had the Four Seasons, Petuna Clarke and The Supremes. the later of the two I never really listen too. Along with those albums there was hundreds of 45's. most of which would have been worth money, if i didn't ruin the covers. (Such as the first pressing of the "Monster Mash" with the cover.) The 45's were varied, from Elvis to some strange jazz. I received when i was also four my first turntable, of course it was plastic, portable-but it also did something that i miss now; being able to stack a couple of Lp's or 45's and let them play. I miss that sound of the clicking, wanting for the next album to play. balancing a penny on the needle handle so it wouldn't stick, or taping a penny or dime.
I think i was the only 5 year old who could name and picture all four beatles members. Of course I had a crush on Paul and John. Always hoping for a reunion. keep in mind i am 5. I have tried to introduce music to my daughter, like my dad. It really hasn't worked out quite as well. Though currently, because of the muppets, she likes Alice Cooper.
My dad always kept up with music, rather always listen to the radio, well at least what was currently playing. It wasn't until I was much older did I understand the impact Cleveland radio had. He still does keep up with music, I can find things like Joe Strummer and KMFDM in his collection. Also, i returned the favor and re-introduce things to him, that he had ignored such as Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry and David Bowie. I would later remember hearing things in the 80's, that now wouldn't get played on such a top 40 radio station. The late 70's and early 80's to me defined the music i would listen to, and remember.
Also TV was also a big part of my music likings. Not just MTV, but the local shows that Kidd Leo used to be on PM Magazine. and USA's Night Flight-which i think was a bigger influence on me then MTV.
